The Gobshites Versus The Doomed

You probably should not name your warband the Gobshites. It does not exactly inspire fear. But in a game like The Doomed, where everything is already lost, it felt appropriate.
I’ve been working towards making an audio drama based on my solo gaming adventures and it’s taking far longer than I imagined. Of course it’d probably go a lot faster if I just focused on it but my ADHD addled brain won’t allow that. So instead of getting the podcast recorded I instead decided to start building a warband and horrors for the solo TTRPG, The Doomed. I also picked up the Warhammer Horus Heresy boxset and am already planning a new Old World army so no idea when I’ll get around to that podcast.
For those normies not in the know, The Doomed is a skirmish game that actively encourages you to kitbash first and ask existential questions later. It is all about desperate survivors facing things far bigger and worse than themselves, which felt like the right arena for this collection of misfits. The basic game loop is that your warband faces off against a monster (The Doomed) and his friends. If you manage to kill a bunch of these utter bastards during a campaign you unlock the big baddie in a final showdown. The ruleset is minimalistic but apparently rather deep and was created by the same guy that made Into the Odd and the Bastionland games (Chris McDowall).I haven’t played it yet but based on reviews it’s pretty good. What hooked me into it were the cool pictures of custom built miniatures by Anna from Gardens of Hecate.I don’t care about the rules as much as I do about the hobby opportunities and creating a cool narrative with my little guys. The world of the Doomed seems pretty grim and open enough to be able to inject some of my own creativity into it.There’s a load of monsters and the campaign system seems easy enough to follow. Wins all round.
I built my warband originally for a campaign of Necromunda which never happened. They’ve sat on a shelf for a while now and I always wanted to use them for something. When I picked up a copy of the Doomed I thought they’d fit right into the world.I settled on having them in a faction called The Cursed which are described as being “The last remnants of old nobility and law.Born to rule, cursed to die”. The Doomed doesn’t give you a load of background on the factions, instead just giving you enough information to inspire you to create your own faction based on certain themes. There’s some pictures of the factions and miniatures made by Anna to help kickstart ideas. But beyond that, you are encouraged to do whatever you want with your little dudes.
So enough yaking. Below are pictures of the Gobshites and some stat cards i made up for them.I’ve actually already kitbashed the Doomed and their buddies and will show them in the next post. I’m hoping to have them painted before then. They’re pretty weird and I’m looking forward to sharing them.
